/Chilean/ Argentinian Wines
  • Ultra Malbec is a wine that expresses the wish of the Kaiken and Montes team of winemakers and growers to share their experience and knowledge of making high-quality wines on both sides of the Andes, particularly with these varieties emblematic of Argentina and Chile. In Mendoza, they grow it at their fincas in Uco and Vistalba. This wine has tremendous structure, complexity, and a long finish. It has persistent tannins that are both firm and rounded. It's known for its minerality, fresh fruit, elegance, and sensuousness. Twelve months in barrel and another six in the bottle, complete this outstanding wine. Kaiken, a new label, is the first Argentine venture of Aurelio Montes, the respected wine maker of the Chilean Vina Montes, producers of the excellent Montes Alpha wines. Kaiken is a Mapuche Indian word for a Patagonian goose that, appropriately, ranges on both side of the Andes. The wines are produced from purchased grapes sourced from several different vineyards in the Tupungato area of Mendoza, and are being made at a leased winery facility. After determining which areas produce the best fruit, Montes eventually plans to acquire his own vineyard land in Argentina and build his own winery there. The name "Kaiken" comes from the Patagonian native word for a wild goose that, appropriately, ranges on both sides of the Andes.

Recommended Serving Temperature: 17º–19ºC (62º–66ºF). Decanting: Recommended for at least 30 minutes. Montes The entrepreneurial spirit and belief in the potential of Chilean wine joined a group of professionals to founded Montes winery in the late 80’s. Aurelio Montes, Douglas Murray, Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand build this project almost from scratch, achieving international recognition thanks to the first production of Montes Alpha, the first Chilean premium wine. Pioneers in the Apalta Valley, to plant on mountain slopes, to capture the influence of music in the maturation of the wine, Montes winery has known how to combine the technique with its belief in the protective power of the angels, on the Feng Shui principles –integrated into the winery –, and sustainable growth. Looking for new qualities, Montes winery has replicated the formula beyond borders, landing on Argentina in 2002 with its subsidiary Kaiken. In 2006 arrived in Napa, United States. In Chile, have also bet on coastal areas such as Marchigüe and Zapallar showing, in each adventure, the ability to continue surprising and delighting wine lovers.
  • Deep and lively ruby-red color. The wine shows elegant Carmenère character, with lovely black pepper aromas, and hints of red berry, chocolate, vanilla, and plum. In the mouth, it is distinctively smooth, with rounded soft tannins. Long finish. The oak is beautifully integrated and balanced. The grapes come from our El Arcángel Marchigüe estate, located at the western end of Colchagua Valley, where, 18 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean, the relatively cool climate allows this late-ripening variety to mature slowly and smoothly and reach full ripeness. Clay soils give strength and power to the wine. After fermentation, the wine is moved to French oak barrels where it is aged for 12 months. Cellaring Recommendations: May be enjoyed now or cellared for 10 or more years. Recommended Serving Temperature: 17° to 19° C (62° – 66° F) Decanting: Recommended for 30 minutes. Food Pairing: Highly recommended with red meats, stir-fried beef, pork chops, spaghetti with Bolognese sauce. • From the La Finca estate, in the Apalta Valley, the 1999 vintage was Montes first Syrah. This is the scarcest of the Alpha wines. Yields are very low at only 6 tonnes per hectare. The wine is aged in French oak barrels for one year and has only one soft filtering. In the manner of Rhone producers, Aurelio adds a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, also originating from Apalta, and some Viognier, to the final mixture. Of intense ruby red color, it has a great aroma with floral, tobacco and leather notes. Strong and full-bodied on the palate, with soft and mature tannins. A very long, elegant and satisfying aftertaste. A superb Syrah. Cellaring Recommendations: Can be enjoyed now or cellared for 10 years. Recommended Serving Temperature: 17º–19º C (63º–66º F). Decanting: Recommended for 30 minutes. Food Pairing: Highly recommended with red meats, stir-fried beef, pork chops, spaghetti with Bolognese sauce, and lamb chops.
